I have been in the IoT connectivity space since before it was labelled as The Internet of Things. Since receiving an email on a PDA was considered groundbreaking. In fact, since even having a PDA was novel. But one thing that has not changed, is the distain that buyers and clients have always had when dealing or negotiating sim card or connectivity contracts. It was always the poisoned chalice of obligations within any business.
Even today, when the technology behind the many different types of connectivity is so varied, the act of engaging with vendors in this field is nearly always left to the last minute because it is either considered a simple requirement, or that it is just too unsavoury.
I have always found this attitude towards this aspect of the IoT ecosystem to be fundamentally flawed. Because as advanced and as groundbreaking as your shiny new product may be... If the connectivity is not up to the task (or worse, fails!), then your business is literally dead in the water.
A problem shared...
Of course, you are more than capable of negotiating any contract for your own business. You know your needs, budget and timescales better than anyone, but it always pays dividends to have someone more experienced in your corner who can help, advise and guide you on what is a good service, and what is a bad one.
Someone who can challenge any claim, or question any differentiator. Knowing that you have an impartial, trusted advisor on your team will give you the confidence to negotiate from a much stronger position and with much greater knowledge.
One of the most common phrases I hear from IoT Connectivity clients at the end of the first meeting is always "I thought our SIM cards were on a good deal". But this is usually based upon a sample base of 3-5 vendors at best. You may indeed have got the best deal from the vendors that you engaged with, but that doesn't mean it was the best deal for your business.
